The Rivers State Police Command has arrested 13 suspects in connection with the assault on journalists in Port Harcourt, following recent attacks that raised concerns over the safety of media workers in the state.

The arrests were made after operatives launched a coordinated operation targeting criminal elements around the Garrison axis of Port Harcourt, where a broadcast journalist, Allwell Ene of Megaletrics FM stations, was reportedly attacked while on assignment.

According to the police, the journalist was assaulted by suspected hoodlums while investigating criminal activities in the area. Another journalist was also reportedly attacked in a separate incident near the Rumuola axis, prompting public outcry and calls for action.

The police said the operation led to the arrest of 13 suspects believed to be involved in phone theft, harassment, and other criminal activities within the area. Authorities added that investigations are ongoing to track down other perpetrators and dismantle the network responsible for the attacks.

The command also stated that the crackdown followed earlier concerns about rising insecurity and criminal activity in parts of Port Harcourt, especially around known black spots frequently raided by security agencies.

Meanwhile, the police have advised journalists to avoid working alone in high-risk areas and to collaborate with security operatives when carrying out investigative assignments.
