A 300-level medical student of the University of Ibadan has died after reportedly ingesting an insecticide called Sniper at his residence, campus and hospital sources say.

The incident occurred on Sunday night when a fellow student found the victim foaming at the mouth and disoriented on the ground floor of Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall. He allegedly admitted to consuming the poison before losing consciousness.

Roommates alerted hall authorities, and the student was initially taken to Jaja Clinic where he was stabilised with oxygen and intravenous fluids. He was later transferred to University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan and placed on life support, but passed away later that evening, hospital officials confirmed.

The student’s name has been withheld, and his parents, who reside in Akure, Ondo State, were contacted and arrived at the hospital before his death.

According to classmates, the young man had been withdrawn, rarely attended classes and was avoiding calls from his parents in the days leading up to the incident. His death has sparked renewed calls for greater attention to student welfare, mental health and support services on university campuses.

Humanitarian advocates have also condemned social media content that glamorises or trivialises self-harm, saying such material can negatively affect vulnerable students struggling with emotional distress.
