A yet-to-be-identified man has been crushed to death by a speeding truck while attempting to cross the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway around the OPIC corridor in Ogun State.
The fatal incident occurred on Wednesday, a few minutes before 1pm, according to eyewitness accounts reported by PUNCH. The victim, described as a young adult male, was reportedly crossing from the Lagos-bound section of the expressway towards the roadside when the truck struck him.
An eyewitness, identified as Nojeem, said the truck knocked the man down and ran over him before the driver sped away from the scene, making it a hit-and-run incident.
“He wanted to cross. The truck knocked him down, rolled over him and sped off.”
The incident caused a disruption to traffic as motorists struggled to navigate the affected section of the busy highway.
TRACE, Amotekun respond
The Ogun State Traffic Compliance Agency (TRACE) confirmed the incident and said its personnel, alongside members of the Amotekun Corps, were deployed to the area to manage the resulting traffic.
TRACE spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi described the incident as a hit-and-run at the OPIC bus stop, outbound Lagos. He said efforts were immediately made to evacuate the victim and restore normal traffic flow.
By about 6pm, Akinbiyi confirmed that the body had been removed from the expressway by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and taken to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu.
The road was subsequently cleared and reopened to normal vehicular movement.
