Former Super Eagles captain Augustine “Jay-Jay” Okocha has recalled the iconic solo goal he scored against legendary German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, saying the moment changed his career and brought him international recognition.

Okocha reflected on the famous strike while speaking on the Obi-Wan podcast on Monday. The goal came during his time with Eintracht Frankfurt against Kahn’s Karlsruher side in the Bundesliga in 1993.

The Nigerian midfielder received the ball outside the penalty area before embarking on a remarkable solo run. He repeatedly dribbled around several defenders before taking on Kahn, eventually beating the goalkeeper and finding the net.

Okocha said he did not set out to hold onto the ball for so long. Instead, he kept delaying his shot because defenders were repeatedly blocking his view of the goal.

“That goal changed my life. That was when I gained recognition outside Germany.”

The strike became one of the most memorable goals of Okocha’s career and was widely replayed on television across Europe, despite being scored before the era of social media. It helped transform the relatively young Nigerian midfielder into a much more widely recognised footballer.

Okocha also revealed that his Frankfurt manager had jokingly warned him that his place in the team depended on the ball going into the net.

According to the former midfielder, his manager told him that if he had been present and Okocha had failed to score after holding onto the ball for so long, he would not have played again for as long as the manager remained in charge.

The goal was particularly notable because Oliver Kahn was already regarded as one of Germany’s outstanding goalkeepers. Okocha recalled that Kahn was enjoying one of his best seasons at the time, shortly before his eventual move to Bayern Munich.

Interestingly, Okocha said he has met Kahn since then but has never discussed the famous goal with him. He joked that Kahn’s serious personality makes it difficult to bring up the subject.

“I’ve met him, but you don’t want to discuss that. He’s a big lad, and he never smiles,” Okocha said.

The 1993 strike has remained one of the defining moments of Okocha’s career. Bundesliga coverage has previously recalled how he danced around five players before beating Kahn in Frankfurt’s 3–1 victory over Karlsruher.

Okocha would go on to enjoy an illustrious career, representing clubs including Fenerbahçe, Paris Saint-Germain and Bolton Wanderers, while also becoming one of Nigeria’s most celebrated footballers.
