Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has denied reports linking a gunfire incident in Osogbo to his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 19, outside the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji, shortly after Governor Adeleke and his entourage visited the monarch following the governor’s receipt of his Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Davido dismisses reports
Reacting to reports that suspected hoodlums had attacked the governor’s convoy, Davido took to X to clarify what happened.
He wrote: “It was a fight outside the palace that had nothing to do with us! The pple love excellency!”
The singer’s comments came as conflicting accounts of the incident emerged.
Initial reports suggested that suspected hoodlums had attacked Adeleke’s convoy, resulting in an exchange of gunfire between the men and the governor’s security personnel. The shooting reportedly lasted between 12 and 15 minutes, causing panic among residents and traders around the palace.
Police give a different account
The Osun State Police Command later provided additional details, saying its preliminary investigation indicated that the confrontation was connected to an attempt to reach Davido, rather than an attack specifically targeting Governor Adeleke.
According to the police, a suspected political thug identified as Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged,” allegedly attempted to gain access to Davido. His resistance by Davido’s security personnel reportedly attracted other gang members, leading to a confrontation and exchange of gunfire.
The police said the suspected gang members subsequently fled towards the Ita-Olokan area.
One person killed
The incident took a deadly turn after a 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Yusuf, was reportedly shot in the Ita-Olokan area of Osogbo.
The police confirmed that Yusuf died from the gunshot injury and said a full-scale investigation had commenced, with efforts underway to identify and arrest those responsible.
The shooting has therefore generated different accounts of exactly what happened, with Davido maintaining that the incident was a separate fight outside the palace, while police accounts indicate that the confrontation involved individuals attempting to gain access to him.
Despite the violence, reports indicate that Governor Adeleke and his entourage left the palace safely.
The incident comes shortly after Adeleke was declared winner of the Osun governorship election, defeating APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji with 511,067 votes to Oyebamiji’s 444,815.
