Popular Nigerian food critic Opeyemi Famakin has warned Nigerians against purchasing allegedly counterfeit body mists, particularly Victoria’s Secret products being sold at unusually low prices in the Nigerian market.
Famakin raised the alarm in a social-media post, drawing attention to the significant price difference between what he described as genuine products and cheaper versions being sold locally. According to reports, some body mists that ordinarily sell for more than N40,000 are being offered for around N4,000.
He questioned how products could legitimately be sold at such a huge discount and urged consumers to be cautious when buying body mists from unverified vendors.
Famakin’s warning centres on the growing availability of counterfeit beauty and personal-care products in the Nigerian market. He alleged that some of the cheap body mists being sold as original may not be authentic and could potentially contain substances that are unsafe for consumers.
The food critic reportedly went as far as describing buying such counterfeit products as “investing in cancer”, stressing his concern about the possible health consequences of using products whose ingredients and manufacturing processes cannot be verified.
He also warned consumers not to assume that a product is genuine simply because a seller increases its price following the controversy. Instead, he advised Nigerians to be careful about where they purchase cosmetics and fragrances and to rely on trusted, verified retailers.
The warning has generated discussion online, particularly among fragrance enthusiasts and consumers who have complained about the difficulty of distinguishing genuine products from counterfeits.
Famakin’s latest comments also revive an issue he has previously encountered in the fragrance space. In 2025, he faced accusations from a perfume seller who questioned the authenticity of one of the expensive perfumes he had displayed online, although that was a separate incident and did not establish that his collection was counterfeit.
