The Lagos State Rapid Response Squad has arrested more than a dozen suspected hoodlums accused of extorting and harassing motorists and commuters along the Lekki-Ajah Expressway.
The arrests followed a report by Saturday PUNCH detailing the activities of hoodlums who had allegedly turned several sections of the Lekki-Epe Expressway into extortion points. Residents and regular road users had complained of repeated harassment, with motorists allegedly forced to pay money to pass through certain areas.
According to the report, the hoodlums were also accused of attacking vehicles with stones, sticks and other objects whenever motorists refused to comply with their demands. The activities reportedly created fear among commuters and raised concerns over the safety of one of Lagos’ busiest routes.
The affected areas reportedly included Marwa Bus Stop, Gbara off Jakande Second Gate, Ikota, Victoria Garden City, Ilaje, Abraham Adesanya and Freedom Way. These locations were identified as hotspots where motorists were allegedly subjected to illegal collections and harassment.
An investigation by Saturday PUNCH had earlier revealed the extent of the problem. During a visit to the Victoria Garden City axis, a group of touts was reportedly seen demanding money from motorists using the road.
The development prompted the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad to intervene. Following the publication of the report, officers moved into the affected areas and arrested more than a dozen of the suspected offenders.
The arrests represent a significant response to complaints from residents who had reportedly written letters and submitted petitions over the activities of the hoodlums. Their concerns centred not only on illegal extortion but also on the growing threat posed to motorists who refused to pay.
The Lekki-Epe Expressway is an important transportation corridor connecting several rapidly developing communities in Lagos. The presence of extortion points along the route has therefore raised wider concerns about security, traffic management and the experience of residents who depend on the road every day.
