Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has praised Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal, describing the teenage star as a “very good player”, but ruled out the possibility of signing him.
Mourinho was asked about Yamal ahead of Real Madrid’s opening La Liga fixture of the 2026/27 season. While acknowledging the Barcelona youngster’s exceptional quality, the Portuguese coach made it clear that he has no plans to bring the player to Madrid.
“I won’t sign him. We already have the best players,” Mourinho was quoted as saying by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Yamal has established himself as one of the most exciting young players in world football. His performances for Barcelona and Spain have earned him widespread recognition, with his creativity, dribbling ability and maturity attracting praise despite his age.
Mourinho’s comments therefore appear less like a criticism of Yamal and more like an expression of confidence in his current Real Madrid squad.
Mourinho backs his squad
The Real Madrid boss suggested that his team already possesses the quality necessary to compete at the highest level, making a move for Yamal unnecessary.
His comments came while discussing the club’s recent transfer activity, including the arrival of Yan Diomande. Mourinho explained that although he did not specifically request Diomande’s signing, he wanted the young winger at the club because of his versatility.
“No, I did not ask, but I wanted him. He’s a great player who can play on both sides,” Mourinho said.
The manager’s remarks highlight his preference for players who can provide tactical flexibility, particularly in the attacking areas.
