Iran has warned Gulf countries against providing any form of assistance or facilitation to the United States military, saying such support would be treated as participation in American military operations against Tehran.
The warning was issued on Wednesday by Major General Ali Abdollahi, Chief of Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces, amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States and growing US military activity across the Gulf region.
According to Iranian officials, Tehran is closely monitoring military movements at US bases in the region. Abdollahi warned Gulf states that allowing their territory, facilities or other resources to be used in support of US operations could make them parties to the conflict.
The warning comes as Washington has increased its military presence around the Middle East. US aircraft and other military assets have been deployed to bases across the Gulf as tensions over the Strait of Hormuz continue to escalate.
Iran draws a line
Iran’s message was directed at countries along the southern shores of the Gulf, including key US security partners. Tehran’s position is that assistance to American forces would not be viewed as neutral cooperation, but as direct involvement in US military activity.
The warning raises concerns for Gulf countries that host American troops and military facilities, particularly because many of them have attempted to avoid becoming directly involved in the conflict.
The latest development follows weeks of growing tension over the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global shipping route through which a significant share of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas normally passes. Iran has maintained that the waterway remains closed amid the conflict, while the United States has disputed Tehran’s position.
UAE cuts economic ties with Iran
The warning also comes as relations between Iran and the United Arab Emirates have deteriorated further.
The UAE announced the suspension of financial and economic transactions with Iran after accusing Tehran of launching ballistic missiles towards maritime areas near the UAE. Iran denied the accusation, describing it as baseless.
The UAE has nevertheless stressed its desire for dialogue and regional stability, highlighting the difficult position facing Gulf states as tensions between Washington and Tehran intensify.
Rising risk of a wider conflict
Iran’s latest warning adds another layer to an already volatile regional situation. Tehran has previously threatened that continued US military action could lead to attacks on strategic infrastructure across the Gulf, including energy facilities.
The United States and Iran have also struggled to revive diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict. Recent negotiations have stalled, while Tehran has threatened to adopt a more offensive military posture if diplomacy fails.
