Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has said he is unfazed by criticism over his flamboyant lifestyle and public display of wealth, insisting that the opinions of other people do not determine how he lives his life.

Melaye made the remarks in an interview with KAA Truths, published on Thursday, while responding to criticism from Nigerians who have questioned his frequent display of expensive properties, luxury items and an affluent lifestyle on social media.

The former lawmaker said he does not attach importance to what people say about him and is more concerned about his relationship with God than public opinion.

According to Melaye, criticism from Nigerians does not affect him because he does not allow people’s opinions to dictate his choices or influence his lifestyle.

“I don’t actually care what people say about me, and I don’t give it any significance. I’m only worried about what God thinks about me,” he said.

Melaye also dismissed the suggestion that criticism over his lifestyle could discourage him from continuing to share pictures and videos of his possessions online. He said he does not read comments about himself on social media and therefore does not allow negative reactions to bother him.

“I don’t care whether anybody likes it or not. It doesn’t bother me. I don’t read comments, so I don’t feel perturbed, I don’t get disturbed. That won’t stop me from posting the next picture,” he said.

The former senator explained that his appreciation for luxury was not necessarily about trying to impress people. Rather, he described his public displays as an expression of gratitude and aspiration.

He said that whenever he came across something beautiful or desirable, he would appreciate it and pray to God for the opportunity to have it.

Melaye’s comments come amid long-running public interest in his extravagant lifestyle. Over the years, the former lawmaker has frequently attracted attention for his collection of luxury cars, designer clothing, expensive accessories and lavish social media posts.

His lifestyle has also generated criticism from Nigerians who argue that public figures should exercise restraint when displaying wealth, particularly in a country where many citizens are struggling with rising living costs and economic hardship.

Melaye, however, appears unwilling to allow such criticism to influence his behaviour. He argued that people who do not personally know him should not have the power to determine how he lives or what he chooses to share publicly.

The former senator also addressed questions about the source of his wealth in the interview, explaining that he had been involved in investments from a young age. He recalled buying a goat when he was 12 and using the proceeds from its offspring to pay some of his school expenses. He also spoke about investments in international companies, including Apple, Microsoft and Uber.
