Four students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, Ogun State, have recounted the terrifying experience they endured after being abducted, describing days of hunger, beatings and being caught in the middle of a gun battle before their eventual rescue.

The students were among those who were recently rescued after spending days in captivity. According to their accounts, their ordeal began when armed kidnappers intercepted them while they were travelling, turning what should have been an ordinary journey into a frightening fight for survival.

The victims said their abductors subjected them to harsh treatment during their time in captivity. They were reportedly beaten and forced to endure difficult conditions as their captors moved them through unfamiliar terrain.

One of the most frightening moments came when the students found themselves caught in crossfire during an exchange of gunfire involving their abductors and security personnel. The situation left them terrified as they struggled to remain alive amid the shooting.

The students also described the psychological toll of captivity. Separated from their families and uncertain about when they would be released, they had to rely on one another for reassurance while enduring the uncertainty of their situation.

Their rescue eventually brought an end to the ordeal, allowing the young men to return to safety and reunite with their loved ones.

The experience has once again highlighted the growing security concerns surrounding road travel and the vulnerability of students and other young Nigerians to kidnapping.

For the rescued students, however, their return is more than simply the end of a news story. It represents a second chance after days in which their safety and survival were uncertain.

Their accounts also offer a glimpse into the often-hidden human cost of Nigeria’s kidnapping crisis: young people deprived of their freedom, families left in anguish and victims forced to endure physical and psychological trauma before help finally arrives.
