The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned from his position amid reported moves by lawmakers to impeach him.
Agbebaku’s resignation took effect on Monday, August 17, 2026, and was confirmed by his media aide, Ivy Adodo-Ebojele, who announced the development on Facebook and said further details would be released later.
The resignation came after reports that a significant number of lawmakers had signed a notice seeking his removal. The Sun reported that 18 of the 24 lawmakers had allegedly signed the notice, exceeding the two-thirds majority required for impeachment.
Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency, was elected Speaker of the eighth Edo State House of Assembly in June 2023. His tenure had previously been marked by political tensions within the legislature, including a 2024 dispute in which he suspended three lawmakers over an alleged plot to remove him and other principal officers.
Following his resignation, lawmakers moved quickly to replace him. Yekini Idiaye, representing Akoko-Edo II Constituency, emerged as the new Speaker and was sworn into office during Monday’s plenary. Channels Television reported that Idiaye’s nomination was moved by Sunday Ojiezele and seconded by Eric Okaka.
The change in leadership has also triggered a reshuffling of other positions within the Assembly. Lawmakers approved the nomination of Ojiezele as Majority Leader and Ojie Inegbebor as Deputy Majority Leader. Natasha Osawaru was also nominated as the new Minority Leader.
The exact circumstances behind Agbebaku’s resignation were initially unclear, although multiple reports linked it to the impeachment moves against him.
