Suspected bandits have invaded several communities in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, kidnapping scores of villagers shortly after Friday prayers.
The attackers reportedly stormed the communities after worshippers had completed their prayers, taking advantage of the gathering to carry out the abductions. The incident has heightened fears among residents, who are now concerned about further attacks in the area.
According to reports, the affected communities are located around the New Bussa axis of Borgu LGA, an area that has experienced growing security concerns linked to armed groups.
The victims were reportedly taken away by the attackers, who operated in the communities before escaping into surrounding areas. The exact number of people abducted was still being established at the time of reporting.
The attack has caused anxiety among residents, particularly those who depend on farming and other activities in rural areas. Many villagers are now worried about leaving their homes or travelling to surrounding communities because of the possibility of encountering armed groups.
Security agencies are expected to intensify operations in the affected areas and work to establish the whereabouts of the abducted residents.
The latest incident adds to the growing insecurity confronting communities in Niger State, where bandit attacks and kidnappings have continued to threaten residents and disrupt economic activities.
Niger State has repeatedly come under pressure from armed groups operating across parts of the North-Central region. Rural communities are particularly vulnerable because of their distance from major security formations and the difficulty of monitoring large forested areas.
