Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has expressed his excitement about joining Coventry City after completing his move from Nottingham Forest.

The Nigerian forward joined the newly promoted Premier League club on Monday, with reports putting the transfer fee at around £9 million. Reuters also confirmed the move, describing it as a deal worth approximately £9 million.

Awoniyi’s transfer brings an end to his four-year spell at Forest, where he became an important figure in the club’s return to the Premier League. The 29-year-old joined Forest in 2022 and went on to make 103 appearances, scoring 23 goals and providing six assists.

The striker endured a difficult period last season, however, as injuries and competition for places limited his opportunities. He featured in 17 Premier League matches, starting only three, and was left out of Forest’s Europa League squad.

His move to Coventry offers him the opportunity for a fresh start and potentially more regular playing time under manager Frank Lampard.

Awoniyi is understood to be excited about the challenge and the ambitions of his new club. Coventry secured promotion to the Premier League and are preparing for their first top-flight campaign in 25 years.

The Nigerian forward will join an attacking group that includes Haji Wright, Ellis Simms and Brandon Thomas-Asante, although Wright is currently dealing with an injury. Coventry have been particularly active in strengthening their squad ahead of their Premier League return.

For Awoniyi, the transfer represents another opportunity to establish himself as a consistent Premier League striker. His physical strength, ability to hold up play and movement inside the box are expected to add a different dimension to Lampard’s attack.

The striker also leaves Forest with plenty of goodwill. Supporters have praised his contribution to the club, particularly during their difficult periods in the Premier League, and many have expressed disappointment at his departure.
