Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has strongly condemned the latest wave of deadly attacks in Benue and Plateau states, describing the killings as painful, deeply disturbing and unacceptable.

In a statement shared on his X account on Monday, Obi reacted to the recent attacks that claimed at least 18 lives in Benue State and 11 people, including members of the same family and a two-month-old baby, in Plateau State. He said the recurring bloodshed has become a tragic pattern that Nigerians must no longer accept as normal.

“We cannot continue to accept this tragic cycle as though it were normal. It is not,” Obi said, lamenting the years of violence, displacement and loss suffered by communities in Benue, Plateau and other parts of the country.

Obi extended his condolences to the bereaved families and the governments of both states, praying for comfort for those mourning and speedy recovery for the injured. He stressed that the crisis transcends politics, insisting that the protection of lives should remain the government’s foremost responsibility.

The former Anambra State governor called on the Federal Government and security agencies to adopt a proactive, intelligence-driven security strategy capable of preventing attacks before they occur rather than merely responding after lives have been lost. He also urged authorities to ensure that those responsible for the killings are identified and brought to justice.

Obi maintained that Nigeria cannot achieve meaningful development while citizens continue to live in fear, adding that lasting peace and security are essential for economic growth, national unity and the restoration of public confidence.
