Veteran United States Senator Mitch McConnell has broken weeks of silence over his prolonged absence from the Senate, revealing that he was hospitalised after suffering a fall that left him briefly unconscious and led to a mild case of pneumonia.

In a statement released on Sunday, the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican said he did not suffer a heart attack, stroke, concussion or broken bones, addressing widespread speculation about his condition. He explained that he is currently undergoing rehabilitation and physical therapy and is gradually regaining his strength.

McConnell attributed the fall to long-standing mobility challenges resulting from childhood polio. He acknowledged that his generation often avoids discussing personal health matters but said he felt it was important to clarify the circumstances surrounding his absence. Despite remaining away from the Senate floor, he stressed that he continues to follow legislative developments and stay engaged with his staff on Senate business.

His absence comes at a critical time for the Senate, with lawmakers preparing to debate key legislation and confirm presidential nominees. The situation has drawn increased attention following the recent death of Senator Lindsey Graham, temporarily reducing the Republican majority and complicating the party’s legislative agenda.

McConnell, who previously announced he will retire at the end of his current term in January 2027, said his immediate focus is on completing his recovery before returning to Washington. He expressed gratitude to medical personnel, colleagues and constituents for their support during his rehabilitation.
