A coroner’s court in the United Kingdom has ruled that Beatrice Solomon, a 27-year-old Nigerian caregiver and mother, died by suicide following a prolonged struggle with mental health challenges linked to personal difficulties after relocating to the UK.
According to evidence presented during the inquest, Beatrice moved from Nigeria to the UK on a skilled worker visa in November 2023. She was found unresponsive at her home on Norris Road, Stanfield, after her husband, Damian Butler, returned from work and alerted emergency services. She was pronounced dead at the scene, while police investigations found no evidence of third-party involvement.
The inquest heard that Beatrice had experienced mental health difficulties over the previous year, which her husband linked to ongoing personal challenges. He also disclosed that he later became aware she had made two previous suicide attempts. A post-mortem examination concluded that she died from oxygen deprivation. Delivering her verdict, Coroner Li Hammond-Naylor ruled that Beatrice had died by suicide, stating that the evidence showed she had researched and planned her actions.
Beatrice, who worked as a caregiver in the UK, is survived by her husband, their young son and other family members. Her death has renewed conversations about the importance of timely access to mental health support, particularly for migrants adjusting to life in a new country and facing personal or emotional challenges.
