The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has appealed to political parties, candidates and their supporters to embrace peace, unity and civility as Osun State prepares for its August 15, 2026 governorship election. The revered monarch urged all stakeholders to ensure that the electoral process remains peaceful and reflects the cherished Yoruba values of harmony and mutual respect.
Speaking at his palace in Ile-Ife, the Ooni stressed that elections should not be viewed as a do-or-die affair but as an opportunity for citizens to freely choose their leaders. He encouraged politicians to conduct issue-based campaigns, avoid inflammatory rhetoric and reject any form of violence that could threaten lives or destabilise the state.
The monarch also called on residents of Osun to uphold the Omoluabi ethos by demonstrating tolerance, discipline and respect for one another throughout the campaign period and on election day. He urged political actors to accept the outcome of the polls peacefully and pursue any grievances through lawful channels rather than resorting to violence.
The Ooni reaffirmed that Ile-Ife, regarded as the cradle of the Yoruba race, has a historic responsibility to promote peace and unity across Yorubaland. He expressed hope that the forthcoming election would strengthen democratic values and further enhance Osun State’s reputation for conducting credible and peaceful elections.
His appeal comes as political campaigns gather momentum ahead of the governorship poll, with security agencies, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other stakeholders continuing efforts to ensure a free, fair and violence-free election. Observers believe the Ooni’s intervention could help encourage political tolerance and peaceful participation throughout the electoral process.
