The Ogun State House of Assembly has officially exonerated its former Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, of allegations of embezzlement that were linked to his removal from office in January 2024. The lawmakers also resolved to commute his impeachment to a resignation, saying the decision was reached after reviewing the facts surrounding his exit from office.
The resolution was adopted during plenary at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, following the presentation of the Committee of the Whole House report by the Deputy Speaker, Lateefat Ajayi. The report stemmed from a petition submitted by Oluomo on March 31, 2026, requesting either a formal exoneration or evidence to support the allegations made against him.
After examining the available records, the Assembly concluded that the allegation of embezzlement was not included in the official notice of removal served on the former Speaker and that there was no evidence before the House to substantiate the claim. Consequently, lawmakers resolved that the allegation should no longer form part of the reasons for Oluomo’s removal from office.
The Assembly further agreed to reclassify Oluomo’s exit from office from an impeachment to a resignation, explaining that the decision was taken in the interest of unity, harmony and camaraderie among members of the legislature. Lawmakers said the move would help preserve institutional integrity while bringing closure to the controversy surrounding the former Speaker’s departure.
Oluomo, who represented Ifo Constituency I, was removed as Speaker in January 2024 amid allegations of financial misconduct. The Assembly’s latest resolution effectively clears him of the embezzlement allegation within the House’s proceedings, although it does not affect any separate legal or investigative matters outside the legislature.
