The Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) has strongly criticised FIFA over its controversial decision to suspend the one-match World Cup ban imposed on United States striker Folarin Balogun, describing the move as a serious threat to the integrity of football. The federation said it plans to file a formal complaint with FIFA’s Ethics Committee, arguing that the handling of the case undermines the sport’s credibility and raises concerns about political interference.
The controversy began after Balogun received a straight red card during the United States’ Round of 32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, a sanction that ordinarily carries an automatic one-match suspension under FIFA regulations. However, FIFA’s disciplinary committee later deferred the suspension, making the striker eligible to face Belgium in the Round of 16. The decision sparked widespread criticism from football bodies and analysts across Europe.
NFF President Lise Klaveness said the federation was particularly concerned by reports that the decision followed intervention from U.S. President Donald Trump, who publicly acknowledged speaking with FIFA President Gianni Infantino about Balogun’s case. Klaveness argued that any perception of political influence over disciplinary decisions damages confidence in football governance and violates the principle of sporting independence.
According to the NFF, the complaint will ask FIFA’s Ethics Committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the suspension of the ban and to provide greater transparency over how the decision was reached. Klaveness also called on Infantino to publicly explain the ruling, insisting that football’s governing body must uphold its own regulations consistently and protect the integrity of international competitions.
The Balogun controversy has drawn criticism from several football organisations, including UEFA, which previously described FIFA’s action as “crossing a red line.” With Norway now preparing a formal ethics complaint, the dispute is expected to intensify scrutiny of FIFA’s disciplinary processes and the role of political influence in global football governance.
