The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) have agreed to formalise a strategic partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening climate services, climate data management and national climate resilience initiatives. The agreement is expected to enhance collaboration between both institutions in addressing the growing impacts of climate change in Nigeria.
The decision followed a courtesy visit by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, to the Director-General of the NCCC Secretariat, Dr. Omotenioye Majekodunmi, in Abuja. During the meeting, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to working together on climate governance, scientific research and evidence-based policymaking.
Prof. Anosike highlighted NiMet’s role as the custodian of more than a century of Nigeria’s meteorological and climate records, noting that the agency provides critical atmospheric data for climate trend analysis, risk assessments and reliable climate projections. He stressed that closer collaboration would improve early warning systems, standardise climate data and support the development of science-based adaptation and mitigation strategies.
The proposed partnership will also explore joint research, capacity development and collaborative funding proposals to attract international climate finance for resilience projects. According to NiMet, improved access to quality climate data is essential for helping policymakers make informed decisions and for strengthening sectors such as agriculture, disaster management, water resources and infrastructure planning.
Responding, Dr. Majekodunmi commended NiMet for its contributions to weather forecasting and climate services, expressing confidence that the MoU would deepen institutional cooperation and strengthen Nigeria’s response to climate change. Both agencies said the agreement reflects their shared commitment to protecting lives, livelihoods and the environment through improved climate services, enhanced early warning systems and evidence-based climate action.
