The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), has disclosed that the agency seized more than 14.8 million kilograms of illicit drugs and arrested 77,859 suspects over the past five years as part of its nationwide campaign against drug trafficking and abuse. He made the disclosure during the signing of Executive Orders on drug abuse prevention and mass mobilisation for societal reorientation by Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi in Dutse.

Marwa said the agency also secured 14,122 convictions during the period, describing the figures as evidence of the NDLEA’s sustained efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks and enforce Nigeria’s drug laws. He added that the agency’s operations have significantly disrupted the activities of drug cartels while strengthening the country’s fight against narcotics-related crimes.

Beyond enforcement, the NDLEA chairman revealed that more than 50,000 individuals battling substance abuse had received counselling and rehabilitation through 31 treatment centres operated by the agency across the country. According to him, the agency remains committed to combining law enforcement with rehabilitation to help victims overcome addiction and reintegrate into society.

Marwa warned that drug abuse continues to fuel insecurity, violent crime and economic sabotage, stressing that addressing the menace requires stronger collaboration among governments, security agencies, communities and civil society organisations. He commended the Jigawa State Government for taking proactive steps to combat drug abuse and promote public awareness through executive action.

He reaffirmed the NDLEA’s determination to sustain its anti-drug campaign through intelligence-driven operations, public education and rehabilitation programmes, urging all stakeholders to support efforts aimed at protecting Nigeria’s youth and safeguarding the nation’s future from the devastating effects of illicit drugs.
