The terrorist group Boko Haram has released an obituary video for one of its cameramen and raid commanders, Abu Salim al-Barnawi, who was killed during a failed attack on a Nigerian military base in the North-East. The three-minute video, narrated in Arabic, is believed to honour the slain operative and highlight his role in the group’s propaganda and combat activities.
According to the North-East Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, Abu Salim al-Barnawi was killed by Nigerian troops during an attempted raid on a military camp last week. Acting Military Information Officer Capt. Muhammed Goni said the terrorist had previously led cross-border raids into Cameroon before joining Boko Haram’s media wing as a videographer and cameraman.
The obituary footage reportedly shows the deceased filming Boko Haram operations while also participating in armed attacks alongside other fighters. Military authorities said the video was likely intended to glorify the group’s activities and boost the morale of its members despite recent battlefield losses suffered during ongoing military offensives.
Security officials noted that Nigerian troops have intensified operations against Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in recent months, resulting in the deaths of several commanders and the recovery of weapons, military equipment and propaganda materials. The military said continued pressure has disrupted the operational capabilities of terrorist groups in parts of the North-East.
Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining operations against insurgents, urging residents to continue providing credible intelligence to security agencies. They stressed that public cooperation remains critical to dismantling terrorist networks and restoring lasting peace in affected communities across the region.
