Police tactical operatives, working alongside local vigilantes, have rescued 11 kidnapped victims after a fierce gun battle with suspected bandits in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State. The successful operation forced the armed criminals to flee into the surrounding forest with suspected gunshot wounds, while all the victims were rescued unharmed.
According to the Niger State Police Command, the rescue mission was launched following credible intelligence on the movement of the kidnappers. Security personnel swiftly mobilised to the location, where they engaged the bandits in a firefight, compelling them to abandon their captives and retreat. Authorities said efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
The rescued victims were taken to a secure location for medical examination and debriefing before being reunited with their families. Police said no ransom was paid for their release, attributing the success of the operation to the effective collaboration between law enforcement officers and local vigilante groups.
The Commissioner of Police commended the courage and professionalism displayed by the operatives and the local vigilantes, stressing that community participation remains vital in tackling kidnapping and other violent crimes. He also urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies to support ongoing efforts to restore peace across the state.
The latest rescue underscores the continued security operations against banditry in Niger State, where authorities have intensified coordinated offensives to dismantle criminal networks and improve the safety of residents, particularly in rural communities frequently targeted by kidnappers.
