Lionel Messi and the Argentina national team have become the focus of growing criticism following their 1–0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, with anti-Argentina sentiment intensifying across social media and among football fans worldwide. While Messi remains one of the sport’s most admired figures, critics say the tournament reinforced perceptions of Argentina as football’s “villains” because of their aggressive style of play and controversial on-field conduct.

Throughout the tournament, many neutral supporters openly backed whichever team faced Argentina. Critics accused the defending champions of benefiting from favourable refereeing decisions, including disputed penalties and disciplinary calls, while others condemned what they viewed as unsporting behaviour during several knockout matches. Argentina’s ill-tempered performance in the final, which included a red card and post-match confrontations, further fueled the backlash.

Despite the criticism, many Argentines rejected the accusations, insisting that their team is passionate rather than arrogant. Supporters argued that the players’ emotional intensity reflects the country’s football culture and that the criticism has been exaggerated. Some fans also defended Messi, stressing that his reputation remains intact despite the defeat and praising his leadership throughout what could be his final World Cup campaign.

Messi himself had addressed the criticism before the final, insisting that Argentina’s success was earned through resilience and determination rather than preferential treatment. Following the loss, the 39-year-old thanked supporters for standing by the team, congratulated Spain on winning the title and admitted that the pain of defeat would take time to heal.

Although the World Cup ended in disappointment for Argentina, the debate surrounding the team’s playing style, sportsmanship and relationship with football fans around the world is expected to continue long after the final whistle. For many observers, the tournament highlighted how one of football’s most successful national teams can simultaneously inspire deep admiration and equally strong opposition.
