Thousands of motorists were left stranded on Wednesday after a lone accident caused severe traffic congestion along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, particularly around the Kara Bridge axis. The incident disrupted the free flow of vehicles as emergency responders commenced recovery operations to clear the affected section of the busy highway.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the accident involved a single vehicle that lost control near Kara Bridge. Although no fatalities were immediately reported, the crash obstructed part of the roadway, resulting in long queues of vehicles stretching several kilometres along the expressway. Emergency personnel were promptly deployed to manage traffic and recover the damaged vehicle.
Officials urged motorists to remain patient and cooperate with traffic officers as efforts continued to restore normal movement. Drivers were also advised to consider alternative routes where possible to avoid prolonged delays while the recovery operation was underway.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is one of Nigeria’s busiest highways, serving as a major link between Lagos and several states in the South-West and other parts of the country. Even minor incidents along the corridor often result in significant traffic disruptions due to the high volume of daily commuters and commercial vehicles.
Road safety authorities have continued to urge motorists to obey traffic regulations, maintain safe speeds and ensure their vehicles are in good condition to reduce the risk of accidents. They also appealed to drivers to avoid reckless driving and remain alert, especially during periods of heavy traffic, to enhance safety on the nation’s highways.
