Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has commended the Nigerian military and security forces for the successful rescue of 360 abducted residents from Ngoshe community in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.
The rescue operation was carried out by troops of Operation Hadin Kai and Special Operations Forces after an intelligence-led mission in the Mandara Mountains, an area long associated with Boko Haram activities. The abductees, consisting mainly of women and children, had been held by the Boko Haram faction known as Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS).
According to military authorities:
- 360 hostages were rescued.
- The victims had been abducted from communities around the Ngoshe axis.
- The operation followed weeks of intelligence gathering and planning.
- The rescued persons have been moved to safe locations for medical care and humanitarian assistance.
The military described the mission as one of the most significant hostage-rescue operations in the North-East in recent times. Unfortunately, two infants died from exhaustion and the harsh conditions endured during captivity and evacuation.
Governor Zulum praised the troops for the operation and reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting security efforts and assisting victims of insurgency. Earlier, after the March attack on Ngoshe, he had assured residents that efforts were underway to rescue those abducted.
The rescue is being viewed as a major setback for Boko Haram and a significant humanitarian success amid ongoing efforts to tackle insurgency in northeastern Nigeria.
