The Nigeria Police Force has detained an Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) official and questioned the media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Lere Olayinka, over an alleged leak of confidential voter registration data.
According to police sources, operatives of the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) are investigating allegations of unauthorised access to INEC’s Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) database, cyber-related offences, and disclosure of classified electoral records.
The controversy reportedly began after Olayinka shared screenshots online showing voter registration details linked to a political figure, sparking questions about how he obtained access to the data.
The detained INEC official is said to have played a role in the alleged release of the voter information, while Olayinka was invited for interrogation as part of the ongoing investigation.
INEC and the Department of State Services (DSS) have also launched separate probes into the incident, assuring the public that findings will be made transparent once investigations are concluded.
Authorities say the case is still under investigation, and no formal charges have been announced against any of the individuals involved.
