The family of legendary Nigerian actor and theatre scholar Kola Oyewo has announced that he will be laid to rest on Friday, August 7, 2026, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, following a three-day funeral programme.
According to the burial programme released by the family, the funeral activities will begin on Wednesday, August 5, with an exhibition of Oyewo’s works and photographs at the Pit Theatre, African Studies Building, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, followed by an Artistes’ Night in his honour. A Christian wake service will hold on Thursday, August 6, while the funeral service and interment are scheduled for Friday, August 7, in his hometown of Oba-Ile.
Oyewo, who died on June 12 at the age of 80, was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s foremost theatre practitioners. Beyond his distinguished acting career, he was an accomplished academic, serving as an associate professor at Obafemi Awolowo University, where he mentored generations of theatre students. He was also celebrated for his iconic portrayal of Odewale in The Gods Are Not to Blame and for his roles in Yoruba classics such as Saworoide and Koseegbe.
The family said the burial ceremonies are intended to celebrate Oyewo’s immense contributions to Nigerian theatre, film, and academia, with colleagues, students, and admirers expected to attend the final rites.
