The United States has significantly reduced or withdrawn parts of its HIV/AIDS funding support to South Africa, a move that has raised alarm among health experts and advocacy groups over the future of the country’s HIV response.

South Africa, which has the world’s largest HIV burden, has long depended heavily on US funding through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) to support testing, treatment, prevention programmes, and community outreach services.

Recent policy shifts under the US government have led to cuts and restrictions in foreign aid allocations, including HIV-related programmes, resulting in widespread disruptions across clinics and NGOs in South Africa.

Reports indicate that these funding reductions have forced the closure of some health facilities, loss of healthcare workers, and interruptions in critical services such as antiretroviral distribution, HIV testing, and prevention programmes targeting vulnerable groups.

Health experts warn that the withdrawal or scaling back of US support could reverse years of progress in fighting HIV, potentially increasing infection rates and putting millions of patients at risk if alternative funding is not urgently secured.

South African authorities have said they are working to cushion the impact by increasing domestic funding and seeking support from other global partners, but acknowledge that the gap left by US funding remains significant.
