A United States lawmaker, Rep. Nancy Mace (R–South Carolina), has announced plans to introduce a bill that would ban immigration from Somalia, Sudan, and South Sudan, citing national security and instability concerns in those countries.

According to a statement released by her office, Mace described the three countries as nations with “serious security risks,” arguing that the United States should not admit immigrants from regions she considers unstable or difficult to vet.

She said the proposed legislation is aimed at “protecting American communities,” and framed it as part of a broader push for stricter immigration controls and enhanced border security.

The bill has already sparked debate in the U.S. political space, as immigration remains a highly divisive issue, with critics of similar proposals warning that blanket bans could affect legitimate refugees and asylum seekers fleeing conflict.

This is not the first such move in Congress, as related proposals have also been introduced in recent months seeking to restrict immigration or tighten eligibility for citizens of certain countries deemed high-risk
