President Bola Tinubu has approved the renaming of the Institute of Petroleum Studies, Kaduna, in honour of the late Shehu Musa Yar’Adua during his 2026 Democracy Day address.

Under the new designation, the institution will be known as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology. The President said the move recognizes Yar’Adua’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development and his vision of national partnership.

Tinubu announced that the Federal Government had approved both the revitalisation and renaming of the completed Kaduna-based institution as part of efforts to honour key figures in Nigeria’s democratic history.

The institution was originally established as the Institute of Petroleum Studies and is expected to focus on specialized training in geological sciences, engineering, and related technology fields.

The announcement formed part of a broader Democracy Day programme in which Tinubu also unveiled national honours for several pro-democracy activists and June 12 struggle veterans.
