The Supreme Court of Nigeria has upheld the conviction and death sentence by hanging imposed on a man convicted of kidnapping, reinforcing earlier judgments delivered by lower courts in a long-running criminal case.

According to the judgment, the apex court dismissed the appeal filed by the convict, ruling that the evidence presented during trial was sufficient and that the sentence was consistent with Nigerian criminal law on kidnapping offences.

The case is part of a series of Nigerian court rulings in which kidnapping and related violent crimes attract the death penalty, especially where victims are harmed or killed during captivity.

In Nigeria, kidnapping is a capital offence in many states, and courts have repeatedly upheld sentences of death by hanging for convicted offenders under both federal and state laws.

The Supreme Court’s decision reinforces the legal position that convictions for serious kidnapping cases can be confirmed at the highest judicial level when appeals lack merit, thereby exhausting all legal options available to the defendant.

The ruling comes amid rising concerns over insecurity and repeated kidnappings across the country, with authorities continuing to impose harsh penalties as part of efforts to deter such crimes.
