The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied claims that Asar Michael Sesugh, a suspected cybercrime suspect who died in Benue State, was in its custody at the time of his death.

In a statement issued by EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, the agency said Sesugh was among 26 suspected cybercrime suspects arrested on April 28, 2026, and remanded by a court pending investigation. According to the commission, Sesugh and two others escaped from the EFCC’s Makurdi holding facility on May 4 after allegedly breaking through the roof of a restroom.

The EFCC said fresh intelligence later revealed that Sesugh was hiding in the Kanshio area of Makurdi. Operatives sent to arrest him allegedly came under gunfire from Sesugh and suspected associates. The commission stated that its officers returned fire in self-defence and that Sesugh was later found wounded by the roadside. He was taken to a police hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The agency stressed that:

“The deceased suspect did not die in EFCC custody and was not on bail at any time.”

The EFCC also said it reported the incident to the Benue State Police Command, which has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death and the alleged shootout.

However, the case remains controversial. Sesugh’s mother has disputed the EFCC’s account, alleging that her son had been released and was later shot by operatives. She has called for justice and an independent investigation into the incident.
