The political crisis within the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has continued to generate fresh controversy following the Court of Appeal judgment in Port Harcourt, which upheld the nullification of the party’s ward, local government, and state congresses.

The ruling has reopened debates over the legitimacy of the current party structure in the state, especially the status of the Tony Okocha-led caretaker executive and rival factions

  • The Court of Appeal affirmed that the Rivers State High Court had jurisdiction to restrain the conduct of APC congresses.
  • It also upheld the earlier decision that nullified the congresses that produced the current state executive structure.

However, interpretations of the judgment remain divided within the party.

Two main camps are currently interpreting the ruling differently:

  • Emeka Beke faction: insists the judgment effectively invalidates the Okocha-led executive and all actions taken under it.
  • Okocha camp: argues the ruling is interlocutory and does not fully dissolve the executive until the substantive case is concluded.

This disagreement has intensified the leadership tussle and widened internal divisions.

The Beke-led group has reportedly urged the APC National Working Committee (NWC) to:

  • Cancel all primaries conducted under the disputed executive
  • Review nominations and party decisions made during the affected period
  • Reconsider the legitimacy of the state leadership structure
