The Oyo State Police Command and Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, have disagreed over claims that he played a role in the recent rescue of kidnapped victims in Igboho, Oorelope Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The controversy follows reports that abducted victims — including a pregnant woman, her children, and other relatives — were released after Igboho issued an ultimatum to alleged community leaders linked to the kidnapping incident.

However, the police have dismissed claims that Igboho was involved in the rescue operation, insisting that the release of the victims was carried out through official security efforts, not civilian intervention.

Police authorities also warned against spreading narratives that could misrepresent operational details or credit individuals outside the formal security structure, stressing that such claims could undermine ongoing investigations.

On the other hand, supporters of Igboho and some residents of the area have credited his intervention and public pressure as a key factor that allegedly forced the kidnappers to release the victims, with videos of celebrations circulating online.

The incident has sparked renewed debate about the role of community activism versus formal security agencies in tackling Nigeria’s kidnapping crisis, especially in rural areas where response time is often delayed.

Authorities say investigations into the abduction and the circumstances surrounding the victims’ release are still ongoing.
