The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has demanded ₦5 billion in damages and a public apology from actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo over what he described as false and defamatory allegations linking him to bribery and extortion.
In a legal letter issued through his counsel, Obi said Okonkwo’s claims made during recent media appearances and online statements portrayed him as being involved in criminal conduct, financial dishonesty, and political corruption, which he described as “extremely grave and damaging.”
Obi is also demanding that Okonkwo:
- Retract the allegations publicly
- Publish an apology across media platforms, including television and social media
- Pay ₦5 billion as general, aggravated, and exemplary damages
- Give a written undertaking to avoid further defamatory statements
According to the letter, Obi warned that failure to comply within seven days would result in legal action without further notice.
Okonkwo had previously alleged that some aspirants in the NDC primaries were asked to make financial payments, claims that triggered strong political reactions and denials from Obi’s camp.
As of the time of reporting, Okonkwo has not publicly issued a formal response to the demand letter.
The dispute has further intensified political tensions around internal party processes and growing rivalry within Nigeria’s opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
