Fear gripped several communities in Edo State after intelligence reports revealed an alleged plot by suspected bandits to abduct schoolchildren in parts of the state, prompting the temporary closure of schools and causing many parents to withdraw their children from classes.

The Edo State Government ordered the immediate closure of three secondary schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area following a security alert from the Department of State Services (DSS). The affected schools were Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School, and Makeke Secondary School.

According to the intelligence report, security agencies intercepted information suggesting that suspected bandits were planning a mass abduction of students in Edo North Senatorial District after failing in previous kidnapping attempts targeting wealthy individuals.

The threat sparked panic among parents, many of whom kept their children at home even before the closure order took effect. Residents expressed concern over the growing wave of kidnappings across Nigeria, particularly recent attacks on schools in other parts of the country.

However, after a security review and the deployment of additional protective measures, the Edo State Government announced the reopening of the affected schools, assuring parents that adequate arrangements had been put in place to safeguard students and staff. Academic activities resumed on June 15.

The government urged parents and guardians to allow their children to return to school, emphasizing that security agencies would continue to monitor the situation closely
