There are strong indications that the 39 abducted schoolchildren and seven teachers kidnapped from communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State may soon regain their freedom as security forces intensify rescue operations. Troops have reportedly blocked major escape routes around the Old Oyo National Park, where the victims are believed to be held.

According to security sources, soldiers and other operatives have surrounded the terrorists’ hideout within the forest, effectively containing the kidnappers and restricting their movement with the hostages. The operation follows the May 15 attack on schools in Ahoro-Esinle, Yawota, and Alawusa communities, during which 46 people were abducted.

Reports indicate that the kidnappers initially demanded the release of detained terrorist commanders, payment of ransom, two Hilux vehicles, and the implementation of Sharia-related conditions. However, mounting military pressure has allegedly forced them to drop some of these demands and focus primarily on ransom negotiations.

Security sources also revealed that the terrorists have been planting improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and frequently changing locations within the forest to frustrate rescue efforts. Despite these tactics, authorities say the group remains trapped and unable to leave the area due to the security cordon.

The Oyo State Government has remained cautious about releasing operational details, insisting that discretion is necessary to protect the lives of the abducted pupils and teachers while rescue efforts continue
