The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, has said Nigeria’s revenue challenge is not the need to increase tax rates but to expand the number of people and businesses paying taxes.
Speaking while receiving a delegation from the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) in Abuja to mark the 2026 National Tax Awareness Day, Oyedele stressed that the Federal Government is focused on widening the tax net and improving compliance rather than imposing higher taxes.
According to him, many Nigerians still view taxation as a way for the government to take money from citizens instead of a tool for national development. He urged the CITN to intensify public enlightenment to improve tax awareness and voluntary compliance.
Oyedele maintained that a fair tax system depends on ensuring that those who are legally required to pay taxes actually do so, rather than placing additional burdens on existing taxpayers. He added that the government’s ongoing tax reforms are designed to promote fairness, simplify compliance, and strengthen revenue generation without raising tax rates.
The minister also expressed optimism about Nigeria’s economic outlook, saying improved tax compliance would provide more resources for infrastructure, healthcare, education, and other public services
