Fresh political violence has erupted ahead of the August 15, 2026 Osun State governorship election, with a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Taofeek Mustapha, shot by suspected political thugs in Osogbo, the state capital.
According to reports, the incident occurred in the Oluode Aranyin area when gunmen travelling in a minibus opened fire. Mustapha sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to a hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
The Osun State Police Command confirmed the attack and said an investigation has commenced to identify and apprehend those responsible. Security has also been reinforced in the area to prevent further violence.
The latest shooting comes amid rising political tension in Osun, where rival parties have traded accusations over a series of violent incidents ahead of the governorship election. Political stakeholders and security agencies have repeatedly appealed to supporters to shun violence and allow a peaceful electoral process
