A final-year student of Olabisi Onabanjo University has been shot dead during an armed robbery attack in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, sparking protests by students demanding improved security in the university community.
The victim, identified in reports as Timi, was killed in the early hours of Thursday when suspected armed robbers invaded student-populated areas of Ago-Iwoye. The attackers reportedly raided several houses, stealing phones, laptops, cash, and other valuables. The student was fatally shot during the operation.
The incident triggered widespread outrage among students, who staged protests and marched to security agencies’ offices, calling for urgent action to tackle rising insecurity around the institution. Shuttle services were also disrupted as students mobilised to demand justice for their slain colleague.
In response, the university management declared Thursday a lecture-free day and expressed condolences to the family of the deceased. The institution assured students that it would work with security agencies to strengthen safety measures within and around the campus community.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident and said an investigation had commenced. Police spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi stated that operatives have launched a manhunt for the suspects and are working to bring those responsible to justice.
