Former Labour Party spokesperson Kenneth Okonkwo has released screenshots of alleged WhatsApp conversations which he says support his claim that aspirants in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) were asked to pay money during the party’s candidate selection process.
Okonkwo made the documents public after receiving a legal demand from Peter Obi’s lawyers over earlier allegations that Obi and some NDC leaders were involved in a scheme requiring aspirants to pay about ₦10 million. Obi’s camp has denied the allegation and reportedly accused Okonkwo of making false and defamatory claims.
According to Okonkwo, the WhatsApp messages, receipts, and related communications were provided by an aspirant and constitute evidence that money was demanded from prospective candidates. He insists that his allegations were made in the public interest and that he is prepared to defend them.
The released screenshots have since generated intense political debate, with supporters of Obi questioning the authenticity and interpretation of the chats, while Okonkwo’s supporters argue that the materials warrant further scrutiny.
