The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has defended the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, while warning Nigerians against ethnic and religious division in public discourse.

In a statement shared on his verified X (Twitter) account on Thursday, Obi said it was unfair for Nigerians to attack or misrepresent religious leaders like Adeboye over national issues, stressing that such narratives often distract from real governance challenges.

He cautioned that the country risks repeating the divisive patterns seen during the 2023 elections, where political discussions in some regions shifted from competence and development to ethnic and religious sentiments.

Obi also warned young Nigerians not to be used as tools for spreading hatred or division, urging them instead to focus on unity and national rebuilding ahead of future elections.

He emphasized that leadership responsibility lies primarily with citizens especially the youth and called for conversations that promote peace, understanding, and national cohesion rather than ethnic suspicion.

The remarks come amid renewed political debates in Nigeria, with Obi urging restraint and unity across religious and ethnic lines as the country approaches another election cycle.
