Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed has criticized prominent opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, describing them as “office seekers” rather than genuine opposition leaders.

Speaking on Trust TV’s Daily Politics, Baba-Ahmed argued that true opposition leadership requires visible solidarity with citizens facing insecurity, not just public statements or social media posts. Referring to recent deadly bomb blasts in Borno State, he questioned why opposition leaders had not physically visited affected communities.

According to him ;

“It’s not enough that they are tweeting about it… They are not opposition members, they are office seekers.”

Baba-Ahmed contrasted current opposition figures with past actions by Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Muhammadu Buhari, recalling that they visited Maiduguri during the height of the insurgency to show support for residents.

Despite his criticism of the broader opposition, Baba-Ahmed singled out Rotimi Amaechi for praise, describing him as an “excellent material” among opposition politicians.

The remarks come amid growing divisions within Nigeria’s opposition ahead of the 2027 elections. Recent political realignments have seen Obi and other opposition figures leave previous coalition arrangements, raising concerns that a fragmented opposition could once again split anti-government votes.

Baba-Ahmed’s comments have sparked debate within opposition circles, particularly given his past role as Obi’s running mate in the 2023 presidential election.
