The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced a major reform in Nigerian football, increasing the prize money for the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions to a record ₦1 billion.
The decision was disclosed after a strategic meeting between NSC officials and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in Abuja.
According to the new structure:
- 🥇 Champions will earn ₦1 billion
- 🥈 Runners-up will receive ₦500 million
- 🥉 Third place will get ₦300 million
The NSC also approved a minimum monthly salary of ₦2 million for NPFL players, aimed at improving welfare and making the domestic league more competitive.
Officials say the move is part of broader efforts to:
- Boost professionalism in Nigerian football
- Attract and retain top talent in the NPFL
- Increase commercial value and sponsorship interest
- Strengthen club licensing and league standards
The announcement marks a huge jump from previous seasons, where champions earned about ₦150–200 million, making this one of the biggest financial upgrades in the league’s history
