A Nigerian man, Atuchukwu Markrufus Onyeanusi (32), has been sentenced in the United States after pleading guilty to using fake identity documents to secure employment, in a fraud and identity theft case prosecuted by federal authorities.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for South Dakota, Onyeanusi was indicted in December 2025 on charges including fraud, misuse of visas and permits, false documents, and aggravated identity theft. He later pleaded guilty in February 2026.

Court records show that he used a fake driver’s licence and fraudulent Social Security card to obtain a job in the United States.

In his sentencing, a U.S. District Judge ordered him to:

  • Serve time already spent in custody (about six months)
  • Undergo one year of supervised release
  • Pay a $1,000 fine and a federal crime victims assessment

He was also accused of violating U.S. immigration and identification laws by using false documents linked to his employment application.

The case is part of broader U.S. efforts targeting identity fraud and document falsification in employment and immigration systems, which authorities say remain common forms of white-collar crime.
