Nigeria and Cameroon have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening border security, maritime safety, and cross-border cooperation between the two neighbouring countries. The agreement is expected to enhance joint efforts against terrorism, smuggling, piracy, human trafficking, and other transnational crimes along their shared border.

According to reports, the pact focuses on improving intelligence sharing, coordinated border patrols, and collaboration between security agencies of both countries. It also seeks to promote peace and stability in border communities while facilitating legitimate trade and movement.

The agreement comes at a time when both nations are facing security challenges linked to cross-border criminal activities and insurgent movements, particularly around the Lake Chad region and other border areas. Security cooperation between Nigeria and Cameroon has been considered crucial in the fight against terrorist groups operating in the region.

Officials from both countries expressed optimism that the pact would deepen bilateral relations and improve the safety of maritime routes in the Gulf of Guinea, a region that has witnessed incidents of piracy and illegal activities in recent years.

The latest agreement adds to a history of security and border cooperation between Nigeria and Cameroon, which share a border stretching nearly 2,000 kilometres. Both countries have repeatedly emphasized the need for joint action to address common security threats and boost regional stability.
