The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has destroyed illicit drugs valued at about ₦2.8 billion in Edo State as part of its efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse.

The exercise, carried out by the Edo State Command of the agency, involved the destruction of large quantities of cannabis and other narcotic substances recovered during intelligence-led operations across the state. The operation was supervised by relevant authorities to ensure transparency and compliance with legal procedures.

Speaking on the agency’s activities, Edo State NDLEA Commander Mitchell Ofoyeju said the command has intensified enforcement operations against drug traffickers and criminal networks operating within the state. He noted that significant quantities of narcotics had been seized and destroyed to prevent them from returning to circulation.

The command also disclosed that:

  • Over 100 suspected drug traffickers were arrested during recent operations.
  • Several convictions were secured at the Federal High Court.
  • Multiple cannabis farms were identified and destroyed.
  • Drug abuse awareness campaigns and rehabilitation programmes were conducted across the state.

According to NDLEA, the destruction of the drugs is part of a broader strategy aimed at reducing the availability of illicit substances, dismantling trafficking networks, and promoting a drug-free society.

The agency reiterated its commitment to sustaining the crackdown on drug-related crimes and urged members of the public to continue providing information that could assist law enforcement efforts.
