The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced a series of internal reforms aimed at strengthening party discipline, transparency, and institutional control, declaring that it will not operate as a personality-driven political platform. The resolutions were adopted at the party’s second National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and released by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director.
According to the party, its objective is to build a lasting political institution rather than a vehicle centered around influential individuals. The NDC stated that members, aspirants, and elected officials must place party interests and national objectives above personal ambitions. The party stressed that it would not become a “personality cult” or a temporary political platform created for specific individuals.
A major aspect of the reforms is the introduction of stricter financial accountability measures. The party directed that all campaign funds raised by candidates at every level must be fully disclosed and processed through designated party campaign accounts. This requirement applies to local government, state, zonal, governorship, and presidential campaigns.
The NDC also reaffirmed the supremacy of party structures, stating that governments elected on its platform would be expected to consult party organs on major policy decisions and appointments, except for personal staff appointments. The party said elected officials must align their actions with the party’s broader goals and principles.
To improve internal discipline, the NEC approved the development of a comprehensive code of conduct for party officials and candidates. It also established a National Reconciliation Committee tasked with addressing grievances and fostering unity among members.
The reforms come as the NDC seeks to position itself as a major political force ahead of the 2027 elections, emphasizing transparency, institutional stability, and collective leadership over individual influence.
